 Muhammad ﷺ: Intelligence as a Pillar of Leadership

From a young age, signs of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ exceptional intellect and noble character were evident. His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, the leader of Quraysh, held him in high esteem even as a child. When Muhammad ﷺ sat on his grandfather’s cushion — a spot reserved for the tribe’s chief — his uncles would try to remove him, but Abdul Muttalib would stop them, declaring, “Leave my son. By Allah, he will have a great future.”

One of the most famous incidents that highlighted his wisdom occurred during the reconstruction of the Kaaba. When the tribes of Mecca were on the verge of conflict over who would place the revered Black Stone, Muhammad ﷺ, still a young man, devised a solution that averted bloodshed. He suggested placing the stone on a large cloth, allowing each tribe’s leader to hold a corner and lift it together. Then, he himself positioned the stone in its place. 

Leadership Demands Intelligence

This story underscores a timeless truth: genuine leadership, especially in the fields of social reform and spiritual guidance, requires exceptional intelligence and foresight. Those with average or below-average abilities in judgment and problem-solving are ill-suited to such roles. Leadership is not merely about holding a position; it demands an individual capable of navigating complex challenges, resolving disputes, and inspiring confidence among followers.

The Modern Relevance

The principle remains true today. When individuals lacking competence, wisdom, or clarity of thought are placed in positions of power, chaos often follows. As the Prophet ﷺ warned, 

“When authority is entrusted to those unworthy of it, then await the Hour.” 

This isn’t just a warning for the end times; it’s a reflection of the societal decline that occurs when the wrong people lead.

History is replete with examples, from corrupt regimes to organizational failures, where incompetent leaders have brought ruin. Even during the Cold War, it is said that one of the most effective strategies used by spies was to place incapable individuals in key positions within the enemy state, leading to its eventual collapse.

The Role of Wisdom in Revival

For the Muslim world, the lesson is clear: the path to revival lies in prioritizing wisdom and competence in leadership. It is a divine principle that only the most insightful and capable individuals can guide communities toward success. As the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated, true leaders are those who combine intelligence with compassion, decisiveness with humility, and strategy with morality.

The Prophet’s life offers an eternal blueprint for what it means to lead with purpose and wisdom — qualities the world desperately needs in every sphere of life.
