Muhammad ﷺ: Life Lessons and Profound Insights (11)

Rising Above Tribalism: A Universal Message for Humanity

Muhammad ﷺ Series

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ proclaimed his message publicly, the reaction from the Quraysh was immediate and intense. The idea of Tawhid—worshiping one God, unseen yet all-seeing—shook the foundations of their beliefs and customs. Their idols, deeply ingrained in their cultural and economic fabric, were suddenly challenged, and they could not fathom such a revolutionary call.

The Quraysh were outraged that the Prophet ﷺ dismissed their false gods, criticized their practices, and introduced a new faith that demanded spiritual and moral transformation. Their resistance was not born out of logic but out of fear of losing power, prestige, and control over their people.

Here, history disproves a common misconception: the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not a mere “Arab nationalist” or someone calling for tribal unity. His mission transcended borders, languages, and ethnicities. He brought a message for all of humanity—a universal call to truth, justice, and the worship of the One God.

Allah confirms this timeless truth in the Qur’an:
But he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. (Surah Al-Ahzab: 40)

The Lesson Insight

The Prophet ﷺ did not aim to cater to tribal aspirations or regional pride. His message was not a cultural or political agenda but a divine revelation meant to unite all of humanity under one Creator. The early resistance to Islam teaches us how deeply people cling to familiarity and power structures, often rejecting truth when it challenges their norms.

This historical moment also serves as a cautionary tale for us today. The strategy of “divide and conquer”—used then by the Quraysh and now by larger global forces—remains a powerful tool. Colonial powers divided nations, exploited differences, and sowed discord to weaken the Muslim world. Today, while Europe unites under economic and military alliances despite linguistic and cultural differences, we remain fragmented despite sharing a common language, faith, and history.

Islam offers a solution that rises above nationalism and tribalism. It calls for a unity rooted not in race, tribe, or flag but in faith, justice, and shared values.

Living the Lesson

  1. Recognize the Power of Unity
Islam reminds us that true strength lies in unity. Avoid falling into divisions based on race, nationality, or sect. Focus on shared values and faith as a means to overcome differences.

  2. Be Wary of “Divide and Conquer” Tactics
From historical colonialism to modern geopolitics, external forces have used division to weaken communities. Recognize this strategy and resist it by fostering cooperation and dialogue with others.

  3. Think Beyond Borders
While patriotism has its place, excessive nationalism can blind us to the bigger picture. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Islam is a global message, not confined to one tribe or nation. As Muslims, we should think globally and act for the betterment of all humanity.

  4. Revisit the Universal Message of Islam
Islam does not belong to one ethnicity or region; it is a guidance for all people. Share its beauty and principles with others without restricting its vision to narrow identities.

  5. Prioritize Justice Over Power
The Quraysh rejected the message of Islam because they feared losing their influence. We must guard against prioritizing personal or collective power at the expense of truth and justice.

Lesson Takeaway

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s mission was a universal call to truth that defied the tribalism of his time. By rejecting narrow loyalties and embracing a global perspective, we honor the message of Islam and strengthen the bonds of unity. Let us remember that “divide and conquer” only works if we allow it. A united community—rooted in faith, justice, and purpose—can rise above any division and become a force for positive change in the world.
