Time Management in Islam Series — Lesson 2: Health and Time: The Silent Blessings We Overlook

Time Management

Imagine holding two priceless treasures, but failing to realize their worth until they’re slipping away. This is the reality for most of us when it comes to health and free time. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) poignantly reminds us of this in a Hadith that serves as a profound wake-up call.

The Prophetic Wisdom:
The Prophet (PBUH) said:

There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6412

This Hadith, narrated by Ibn Abbas, highlights how easily we are “cheated” out of these blessings. The Arabic word “مغبون” (maghbun) refers to being deceived or outwitted, suggesting that the loss of health and free time is not merely accidental but a subtle trap we often fall into unknowingly.

The Illusion of Endless Time:
Time is one of the most deceptive aspects of life. We often overestimate its availability, postponing important tasks or self-improvement for “later” — a later that might never come. This illusion can lead to regret when opportunities pass or circumstances change.

Similarly, health seems stable until it isn’t. Many of us take our physical and mental well-being for granted, thinking we can always “catch up” or “do it tomorrow” when we feel better.

Lessons for Modern Professionals:

  1. Prioritize Wisely: Treat free time as a rare commodity. Invest it in learning, growth, and acts of kindness. Avoid falling into the trap of procrastination — what you postpone today may become unattainable tomorrow.
  2. Health is Wealth: Allocate time for self-care and well-being. Prioritize physical health through exercise and a balanced diet, and mental health through reflection and mindfulness.
  3. Micro-Productivity: Use small pockets of free time effectively. Even 10–15 minutes can be enough for learning something new, reading, or planning your day.

Reflective Questions:

  • Are you mindful of how you spend your free time?
  • What steps can you take today to safeguard your health for the future?
  • If you knew your time was limited, what would you do differently right now?

A Final Thought:
The illusion of time’s abundance can be our greatest deception. The Prophet’s wisdom invites us to wake up, see time and health as the blessings they are, and act accordingly.
