“Time is money” — a phrase deeply ingrained in modern, materialistic thinking. Yet, in Islam, the value of time transcends monetary worth. Time, unlike money, is irreplaceable, and once lost, it can never be recovered. This profound understanding shifts our perspective on how we manage our most precious asset: time.

A Different Perspective:
The popular Western adage “Time is money” implies that time is valuable because it can generate wealth. However, Hasan al-Basri, one of the revered scholars in early Islam, observed a deeper truth:

“I have seen people who were much more careful about their time than their money.”

This statement highlights the Islamic view that time holds a value far beyond financial metrics. While money can be earned, saved, or even regained, time, once spent, is gone forever. This distinction invites us to reflect: Are we as protective of our time as we are of our finances?

The Quranic View:
The Quran emphasizes the fleeting nature of time:

“By time, indeed mankind is in loss.”
— Surah Al-Asr (103:1–2)

   Spend time on activities that align with your values and goals. Whether it’s learning a new skill, engaging in self-reflection, or nurturing relationships, ensure your time investments yield meaningful returns.

• What “time leaks” can you eliminate from your daily routine?
• How can you shift your focus from financial wealth to time wealth?

A Final Thought:
In the race to earn and save money, let’s not forget the currency that truly defines our lives: time. Islam teaches us to guard it fiercely, use it wisely, and recognize that every moment counts.
