Islamic Transformation (7): The Prophet ﷺ as a Loving Father in a Society That Rejected Daughters

In pre-Islamic Arabia, sons were prized, while daughters were often seen as burdens or sources of shame. This societal mindset led to widespread mistreatment and even the burial of infant girls. In stark contrast, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplified a revolutionary approach to fatherhood—one that was rooted in love, equality, and compassion for all his children, regardless of their gender. His actions shattered cultural prejudices, replacing them with a divine model of familial care and affection that continues to inspire.

The Prophet’s ﷺ Love for His Daughters

The Prophet ﷺ had immense love for his daughters, particularly Fatima رضي الله عنها, who held a special place in his heart. When Fatima would enter a room, the Prophet ﷺ would stand to greet her, kiss her forehead, and seat her beside him. This tender gesture was unprecedented in a society that undervalued women, especially daughters.

He said of her:

“Fatima is a part of me; whoever harms her harms me.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Through his treatment of Fatima, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized the dignity and importance of daughters, challenging the prevailing norms of his time.

Carrying Umamah During Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated his love for his grandchildren with similar warmth and care. One striking example is how he carried Umamah, the daughter of his daughter Zainab رضي الله عنها, during prayer.

Narrated by Abu Qatadah رضي الله عنه:

“The Prophet ﷺ came out to us, carrying Umamah bint Zainab on his shoulder. He led the prayer, and when he bowed, he put her down, and when he stood, he picked her up.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

This act highlights the Prophet ﷺ’s balance between devotion to worship and his affectionate role as a grandfather. It also sent a powerful message about the value of female children in a culture that often dismissed their worth.

Protecting and Caring for His Daughters

The Prophet ﷺ’s concern for his daughters’ well-being extended beyond expressions of love. When Zainab رضي الله عنها was in Mecca and faced challenges due to her allegiance to Islam, the Prophet ﷺ actively sought to ensure her safety. His efforts to reunite her with her family in Medina and his grief at her suffering demonstrate his profound care as a father.

The Prophet ﷺ with Hasan and Husain

The Prophet ﷺ’s love and affection extended to his grandsons, Hasan and Husain رضي الله عنهما. He was known to play with them, show them affection publicly, and even involve them during significant moments.

In one instance, while delivering a sermon, the Prophet ﷺ noticed Hasan and Husain entering the mosque. He descended from the pulpit, carried them, and said:

“Indeed, Allah has spoken the truth: ‘Your wealth and your children are but a trial.’” (Surah At-Taghabun, 64:15)
He continued,  

“I saw these two walking and could not bear it, so I interrupted my speech and picked them up.” (Sunan Abi Dawood)

This incident highlights how the Prophet ﷺ balanced his leadership responsibilities with his role as a grandfather, showing that family bonds are integral to a fulfilling life.

Transforming Cultural Norms

The Prophet ﷺ’s example as a loving father and grandfather revolutionized the societal view of daughters and women. His actions taught that daughters are blessings, not burdens, and that showing affection is a strength, not a weakness.

The Qur’an reinforces this transformative message:

“To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what He wills. He bestows female [children] upon whom He wills, and He bestows male [children] upon whom He wills.” (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:49)

This verse underscores that both sons and daughters are gifts from Allah, equal in their value and potential.

Conclusion

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s conduct as a father and grandfather dismantled the patriarchal attitudes of his society, replacing them with a divine model of compassion, equality, and respect. His love for his daughters and grandchildren reminds us that the value of a child lies not in their gender but in their unique potential and connection to their Creator.

In a world where gender biases still persist, his example continues to offer timeless lessons on how to foster loving, equitable family relationships that honor the rights and dignity of all members.

  تسببت تلك الصرخة الهائلة التي أطلقها الكائن الفضائي في فقداني للوعي وحين فتحت عينيّ، شعرت بثقل في رأسي وكأنني كنت نائمًا لقرون. تململت قليلًا، وحين حاولت النهوض، وجدت نفسي مقيّدًا داخل زنزانة معدنية باردة. كانت جدرانها تُصدر وهجًا خافتًا بلون أزرق غريب، وبابها بلا مفصلات أو مقبض، وكأنه قطعة واحدة لا تُفتح ولا تُغلق. تحسّست معصميّ لأجد أصفادًا شفّافة، كأنها مصنوعة من الضوء نفسه. لا ألم، لا إحساس بالضغط، ولكن لا مجال للتحرّك .
