Islamic Worldview (11): Releasing the Soul to Its Divine Purpose
The Innate Connection Between the Soul and Its Creator
In our previous discussion, we explored the enigmatic nature of the soul, recognizing its existence through the tangible effects it leaves on our lives. Now, let us delve deeper into its ultimate function: the soul as a means of connection to its Creator.
Islamic teachings emphasize that the soul inherently inclines toward Allah. This connection is rooted in the divine origin of the soul, as revealed in the Quran:
"When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit..."
(Surah Al-Hijr: 29)
The soul, created from Allah's spirit, is naturally inclined toward its source. It finds no peace or satisfaction except in reconnecting with the unseen realm from which it was drawn.
The Uneasy State of a Disconnected Soul
When a person suppresses this innate longing, as is often seen in those who reject faith or are consumed by material pursuits, the soul becomes restless. This state manifests as an internal disquiet, an inexplicable void that no worldly achievement can fill. The Quran alludes to this condition:
"...and whoever turns away from My remembrance—indeed, he will have a depressed life."
(Surah Ta-Ha: 124)
Without the tranquility of divine connection, the soul remains uneasy, yearning for its origin. This explains the widespread existential crises and spiritual struggles observed in societies detached from faith.
The Role of Faith in Guiding the Soul
The essence of Islamic nurturing lies in supporting the soul's natural inclination toward Allah. Faith serves as a beacon, reinforcing the innate guidance embedded within the soul and aiding it in overcoming obstacles that obscure its path to the Creator.
Through acts of worship, contemplation, and adherence to divine guidance, the soul is freed from the chains of doubt, ignorance, and material excess. It ascends to a state of clarity, witnessing the divine presence in every aspect of existence.
A Call to Rediscover the Divine
In a world increasingly dominated by distractions and materialism, the call of the soul often goes unheard. Yet, the essence of true fulfillment lies in this connection to the Creator. As the Quran reminds us:
"Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
(Surah Ar-Ra’d: 28)
Islam’s nurturing system does not impose a foreign framework on the soul but rather unlocks its inherent potential, releasing it from its burdens to recognize and worship Allah.
Final Thought: Let the Soul See Allah
The ultimate goal of nurturing the soul in Islam is to enable it to witness Allah’s presence in all things. This is not merely a theoretical aspiration but a profound transformation that aligns the soul’s purpose with its Creator’s will.
The journey of the soul begins with acknowledging its divine origin, continues with its yearning for connection, and culminates in its ultimate fulfillment: seeing Allah in every aspect of life.
Let us embark on this transformative journey, freeing our souls to find true peace and purpose.
