Islamic Worldview (14): Discovering the Divine Through the Universe

Islamic Worldview Series

The Two Eternal Books

Muslims believe that Allah provided humanity with two everlasting books as a guide to understanding His majesty and divinity. These two books are:

  • The Written Book (Al-Mastur): The Quran, Allah’s ultimate revelation.
  • The Visible Book (Al-Manzur): The universe, a vast and intricate testament to Allah's creative power.

While the Quran offers direct guidance, the universe serves as a constant reminder of Allah's existence and attributes. This article focuses on the latter—the visible book—and how it plays a vital role in nurturing the soul.

The Universe: A Living Testament to Divine Power

The universe is Allah’s grandest sign, a masterpiece of creation filled with wonders that testify to His infinite knowledge and power. However, routine and familiarity often dull our sensitivity to these signs. The rising and setting of the sun, the alternating of night and day, the stars that illuminate the night, and the cycle of life and growth—all these miracles become ordinary through repetition.

Yet, for those who pause and reflect, the universe comes alive as a vibrant exhibit of Allah’s creative brilliance. Consider the following examples:

  • The sun and moon, perfectly aligned in their orbits, providing light and regulating time (Quran 36:38-40).
  • The growth of plants and the sustenance they provide (Quran 6:95-99).
  • The rain descending from the heavens, reviving the earth after its death (Quran 16:10-11).

These phenomena are not random; they are meticulously designed signs, pointing to the One who created them.

How the Universe Nurtures the Soul

Islamic nurturing emphasizes engaging with the universe to enhance one’s connection with Allah. The Quran repeatedly urges humanity to observe, ponder, and find Allah’s hand in creation. This connection nurtures the soul in several ways:

  1. Awakening Awe and Gratitude
Reflecting on the universe evokes awe and gratitude toward Allah. The intricate balance in nature, the vastness of the cosmos, and the beauty of creation all inspire a deeper appreciation for the Creator.

  2. Strengthening Faith Through Reflection
When believers observe the universe, their faith in Allah’s oneness and omnipotence grows. The Quran encourages this reflection:

"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding." (Quran 3:190)

  3. Calming the Soul and Fostering Trust
Nature’s regularity instills a sense of tranquility and trust in Allah’s plan. The steady rhythm of day and night and the rain’s rejuvenation of the earth remind believers of Allah’s constant care.

Selected Quranic Verses Highlighting Cosmic Signs

The Quran is replete with verses inviting humanity to explore the universe. Some examples include:

"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of the night and the day, the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people... are signs for a people who use reason."(Quran 2:164)
"It is Allah who causes the seed and the date stone to sprout. He brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living. That is Allah! So how are you deluded?"(Quran 6:95)
"Do they not look at the sky above them – how We have built it and adorned it, and it has no rifts?"(Quran 50:6)

Conclusion: A Call to Reflect

The universe is not merely a collection of stars, planets, and natural phenomena; it is an invitation to know Allah. By observing the world around us, we find countless signs of His majesty and mercy. These reflections awaken the soul, elevate its consciousness, and strengthen its bond with the Creator.

In nurturing the soul, Islam encourages a balanced approach: constant engagement with the Quran as the written guide and the universe as the living testimony. Both books lead to the same truth: there is no deity but Allah.
