The Parable of Light and Darkness

 أَوَمَن كَانَ مَيْتًا فَأَحْيَيْنَـٰهُ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُۥ نُورًا يَمْشِى بِهِۦ فِى ٱلنَّاسِ كَمَن مَّثَلُهُۥ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍۢ مِّنْهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

"And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing."
(Surah Al-An'am, 6:122)

Context of the Analogy

This parable juxtaposes two contrasting states: the lifelessness of disbelief and the vitality of faith. The verse compares a person who was spiritually "dead," brought to life by Allah’s guidance and gifted with light to navigate life, with one trapped in utter darkness, unable to escape.

On the other hand, disbelief leaves a person in darkness, deprived of direction and hope. The verse warns against becoming complacent in such a state, as it is a self-imposed condition stemming from rejection of Allah’s signs.

Additionally, the verse points to human accountability: Allah offers light and guidance, but individuals must choose to embrace it.

This parable invites us to reflect on the role of faith in our lives. Do we experience it as a light that guides us, or are we stumbling in darkness due to negligence of our spiritual responsibilities?

It reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah’s guidance through prayer, Quranic reflection, and righteous deeds. The "light" of faith is not static; it grows brighter through sincere effort and dims through neglect.

This analogy also inspires hope. Even if we feel lost, Allah’s mercy is vast, and He can revive our hearts and illuminate our path if we turn to Him.

  تسببت تلك الصرخة الهائلة التي أطلقها الكائن الفضائي في فقداني للوعي وحين فتحت عينيّ، شعرت بثقل في رأسي وكأنني كنت نائمًا لقرون. تململت قليلًا، وحين حاولت النهوض، وجدت نفسي مقيّدًا داخل زنزانة معدنية باردة. كانت جدرانها تُصدر وهجًا خافتًا بلون أزرق غريب، وبابها بلا مفصلات أو مقبض، وكأنه قطعة واحدة لا تُفتح ولا تُغلق. تحسّست معصميّ لأجد أصفادًا شفّافة، كأنها مصنوعة من الضوء نفسه. لا ألم، لا إحساس بالضغط، ولكن لا مجال للتحرّك .
