Islam and the Environment (1): A Forgotten Legacy

Islam and the Environment

The world is at a tipping point. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, and the reckless exploitation of natural resources threaten the very survival of life on Earth. Governments, scientists, and activists scramble for solutions—yet a crucial perspective is often overlooked: What does Islam say about the environment?

For many, the idea that Islam offers a comprehensive environmental ethic comes as a surprise. While discussions about faith and ecology are common in some religious traditions, Islam’s deep-rooted environmental teachings remain largely unexplored in global discourse. However, more than 1,400 years ago, the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established a profound framework for environmental responsibility—one that modern society desperately needs to rediscover.

This series is an invitation to uncover Islam’s forgotten legacy of ecological wisdom. We will explore fundamental principles such as stewardship (khilafah), trust (amanah), balance (mizan), and mercy (rahmah)—and how they provide real, actionable solutions to today’s environmental crisis.

Far from being abstract ideals, these principles shaped entire civilizations. From the regulated use of water in medieval Islamic cities to the establishment of wildlife reserves and protected lands (ḥima), Muslim societies once led the way in sustainable environmental management. How did we lose this wisdom? And more importantly—how can we revive it?

Through this series, we will embark on a journey to rediscover Islam’s environmental vision and its relevance in solving today’s most urgent crises. Whether you are Muslim or not, these teachings offer a fresh perspective on how faith, ethics, and science can work together for a sustainable future.

➡️ Join the conversation. Explore. Reflect. Act.

Now, let’s begin with the first principle: The Islamic Vision for the Environment – Stewardship (Khilafah) & Trust (Amanah).
