Islam and the Environment (4): Forests & Greenery – The Prophet’s Emphasis on Tree Planting & Protecting Nature

Islam and the Environment

In a world battling desertification, deforestation, and rapid urbanization, the teachings of Islam offer a strikingly powerful and timeless vision for the protection of greenery, forests, and plant life. Long before the term “climate change” was coined,

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instilled in his followers a love for trees and a deep responsibility toward nurturing and protecting nature.

Planting Trees: A Lasting Act of Worship

The Prophet ﷺ made it clear that planting trees is not just an agricultural act—it is a spiritual one, a form of charity whose rewards continue even after death:

"If a Muslim plants a tree or sows a seed, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2320)

This hadith alone is a foundation for sustainable agriculture, reforestation, and urban greening. It redefines success—not in terms of profit, but in giving life and sustenance to other creatures.

Even more powerful is the Prophet’s message of hope and action in the face of despair:

"If the Hour (the Day of Judgment) is about to be established and one of you has a seedling in his hand, let him plant it." (Musnad Ahmad, 12902)

In this moment of cosmic upheaval, the Prophet ﷺ calls for a simple, life-affirming act: plant a tree. This is not only symbolic—it is a practical call to preserve life, no matter the circumstances.

Greening the Earth: A Form of Worship

The Quran speaks of the earth’s greenery as a sign of God's mercy and power:

"Do they not see how We drive the rain to the barren land and produce thereby crops from which their livestock eat and they themselves? Will they not then see?" (Quran 32:27)

The greenery of the earth is not ours to exploit recklessly, but a divine miracle to be appreciated and protected. Islam urges believers to reflect on the interconnectedness of all life—how the plant kingdom sustains humans, animals, and ecosystems.

The Prophet ﷺ lived this vision:

✅ He established “protected zones” (ḥimā) where trees could not be cut and animals could not be hunted, laying down the foundation of environmental zoning centuries before modern legal frameworks.

✅ He prohibited the unnecessary cutting of trees, especially in times of war, even if the enemy was being fought. This made Islamic environmental ethics universal—valid even in the most extreme conditions.

✅ He encouraged the greening of arid lands: “Whoever revives barren land, it is his.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 1378) — an early call for land rehabilitation and ecological restoration.

The Islamic Civilization & Forest Management

Historically, Islamic societies took these values seriously:

🌿 In Andalusia, massive orchards and botanical gardens were developed with advanced irrigation systems.

🌿 The Ottomans maintained forests as public trusts (waqf) and appointed forest guards to protect against illegal logging.

🌿 Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) addressed issues like property rights, forest preservation, and community stewardship, giving religious legitimacy to environmental protection.

From Faith to Action

Today, our forests are vanishing at alarming rates. Millions of hectares are lost annually, disrupting ecosystems, accelerating climate change, and displacing wildlife and communities. Yet, Islam’s environmental teachings remind us that the smallest act—planting a tree, preserving a park, refraining from wastefulness—can echo through eternity.

🌱 As caretakers of the Earth (khalifah), it is our God-given duty to protect, preserve, and plant. This is not idealism; it is faith in action.

Let us revive the Prophetic spirit—not just in words, but in deeds. One tree at a time.
