Unmodern Aspects of Islam (22): Endless Choices, Empty Hearts

Unmodern Aspects of Islam

Did you know the average supermarket today carries over 30,000 products? Endless choices for clothes, food, gadgets, entertainment—yet why do our hearts still feel so empty?

We scroll through online shops, fill carts we don’t need, and chase the “next thing” to feel satisfied. But the more we consume, the hungrier our souls become. This isn’t abundance—it’s emptiness wrapped in packaging.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Richness does not lie in the abundance of worldly goods, but richness is the richness of the soul.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 6446; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 1051)
Contentment isn’t about how much you own—it’s about how much peace you feel inside.

The early Muslims lived simply, but their lives were full. They valued what they had, repaired instead of replaced, and shared instead of hoarding. Their joy came not from endless options but from gratitude for every blessing.

What about us today? Instead of asking, “What else can I buy?” try asking, “What can I thank Allah for right now?” You’ll find that gratitude fills the heart faster than any new purchase.

Because in a world of endless choices, the real luxury is a content heart.

In a modern world, the Sunnah is our way back to what truly matters.
